How to prepare for the King’s coronation
A coronation is a once-in-a-generation event, with the last one taking place 70 years ago! King Charles’ Coronation on May 6th is a time for the country to come together and celebrate a new monarch, whilst reflecting on all our history. Since the event is so rare, it’s a great excuse to have a celebration and bring your local community together. If you’ve not held an event anything like this before, read on to find out how to celebrate this historic occasion properly.
How to celebrate the King’s coronation
There are a few things that you need to do to prepare for the King’s coronation, including:
1. Plan with your neighbours
It’s always more fun to celebrate with the people around you rather than alone, so get your neighbours involved! Hosting a street party will require permission from your local council, but you can always hire out an event space or host a gathering at one of your homes/gardens instead. Getting a plan in place is the first step towards an unforgettable event.
2. Get your screen ready
Why have a coronation party if you’re not going to watch the coronation? Make sure that you have your screens ready to see the big day unfold. Some people will be happy watching on their TVs, but others may prefer to use projector screens, especially for neighbourhood parties. Test whatever you’re using ahead of time, so you don’t risk having problems on the day!
3. Think about food
What’s a good party without food? Put a catering plan together and determine who should bring what along. You can have whatever dishes you like – of course, you can’t go wrong with the British staple of afternoon tea! – but if you’re looking for something a little different, why not ask people to bring dishes from a different Commonwealth nation to really tie the event together?
4. Décor, décor, décor
The best parties have decorations which tie the theme together and bring the celebration to life. Be sure to get some decorative Coronation items like bunting, napkins, plates and Union Jack flags – there will be no mistaking why everyone has come together to celebrate! You can show off your national pride no matter your budget.

5. Enjoy the day
There’s no use in organising a great party if you’re not going to enjoy it yourself! Once everything’s organised you can stop fretting and relax, taking in the pageantry of such a historic day with your friends and family. The more you organise in advance, the less likely you are to have problems, but just remember that if something does go wrong, it’s not the end of the world.
